Words for Westgate
The fascinating museum inside Canterbury’s striking Westgate Towers – the largest surviving mediaeval town gateway in Britain – is undergoing a revamp.
As part of the upgrading, Stewart is writing lengthly panels explaining the museums exhibits (including maquettes of the barons involved in the Magna Carta episode of 1215) and the significant role played by Canterbury in English history. ‘I’ve learned so much while researching this project,’
Stewart says. ‘After it ceased to have a defensive role, Westgate housed the city gaol – unbelievable! Men and women, murderers and debtors all crammed together in one insanitary building!’
